How I met Evgeny Baranov for the first and last time

It was the last day of Igromir, Sunday. We (who exactly doesn’t matter) filmed the last materials and decided to go to the Vegas shopping center to eat in the food court. There was just a sea of ​​people – it was easy to get lost in lines for food, and finding a free seat somewhere in the hall seemed absolutely impossible. However, despite all the difficulties, we still found some guy sitting alone at the table. After a short conversation, he gave us a seat and left.

I quickly went to get some food (yeah, I stood there for about twenty minutes just waiting for the order) and returned to the table. Before I had time to start eating, I saw Evgeniy Baranov – he was walking around the hall with a tray, looking for an empty seat.

Frankly, Zhenya was, is, and will be my favorite author on SG. I really wanted to take a photo with him at the Igromir meeting, but something went wrong somewhere, so I never got a photo with him. And so, when I saw him here, it literally blew my mind. I definitely decided that this person should be at the same table with me, so I immediately called him to us – we just had one extra chair.

He said he sincerely hoped that one of the people in the food court would recognize him and let him join him at his table. The only question I could muster was “What are you even doing here on Sunday?”?“The answer turned out to be quite simple: Zhenya decided to spend the last day at Igromir “for himself” – he took pictures of things, played the remaining games, looked at some stands and, in the end, after the meal he was about to leave.

You know, it happens that a person in life turns out to be completely different in character from himself on stream/in a video, but Baranov is clearly not this case. He was exactly the same as I was used to seeing him on streams – maybe a little boring, but an incredibly interesting person. It was fun to communicate with him, it was pleasant to listen to him, and overall, he gave the impression of an intelligent and educated person. Over time, we started a nice conversation: we discussed Iron Harvest, DOOM Eternal, Kojima, DTF, Stopgame and that’s all.

Unfortunately, time was running out – we had to get ready. Evgeny, however, remained: his tray was still not empty. And then I ran into the main problem – I couldn’t take a selfie with him. How do you imagine it?? The guy sits, eats, chats on various topics, and then I just ask him for a photo? Any normal person would do this, but I remind you that Zhenya is my favorite author on SG, so a little cowardly girl is squealing inside me, who in every possible way dissuades me from taking a photo, because I can ruin this moment. I thought that I would take a selfie with Evgeniy next time – in 2020 there will be another Igromir and then for sure!

However, not all our dreams are destined to come true. I was on the subway when I saw the news that Baranov had died. Thoughts are confused, consciousness is clouded. Finding myself in a literal stupor, I even passed my station. The first thing that came to my mind was this story. And then I suddenly remembered something important: during that very conversation, I still took a photograph of Zhenya!

And this is the only photo of Evgeniy that I have. If I knew how everything would turn out, I would definitely take a selfie with him, and maybe even give him something! But, unfortunately, life doesn’t work like that, so I can’t go back and change everything, although I would really like to.

For some, this story may seem inconspicuous and insignificant – in fact, it is what it is. However, for me these are memories. I was able to meet someone I’m a fan of, but I never got to do what I wanted because I was afraid to just walk up and ask for a photo.
